Samsung Electronics is drawing attention as it weighs restarting construction of its state‑of‑the‑art Pyeongtaek Plant 5, or P5, after a two‑year pause. The company's recent improvements in high‑bandwidth memory (HBM) and next‑generation DRAM technologies and the prospect of explosive growth in the AI chip market over the next few years have reportedly prompted plans for fresh domestic capital spending.
According to industry sources on July 1, Samsung executives are in close talks on restarting both construction and investment at P5. Some staff members have already been dispatched to the site to reorganize construction materials, effectively getting work under way. Industry watchers expect heavy equipment to be fully deployed at the location as early as October.
