German government issues final funding approval for new Infineon fab in Dresden

Munich/Dresden – 8 May 2025 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) has received final approval for the funding of its new plant in Dresden (Smart Power Fab) from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs. Infineon is expanding the site in order to meet customer demand for example for renewable energies, efficient data centers and electromobility. Infineon will invest five billion euros of its own money, creating as many as 1,000 new jobs. This figure does not include additional jobs which will be generated in the investment's ecosystem: Experts expect a positive job effect of 1:6 (Source: ZVEI-Studie). In addition, Infineon is also investing in Dresden through its participation in the joint venture "European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) GmbH".

TSMC starts construction its 1.6nm and 2nm-capable U.S. fab: Fab 21 phase 3

TSMC on Wednesday officially started building its third semiconductor facility — Fab 21 phase 3 — near Phoenix, Arizona, according to a report from Bloomberg. The third module of the company's Fab 21 site will be capable of producing chips using the company's N2, N2P (2nm-class), and A16 (1.6nm-class) process technologies when it's completed, between 2028 and 2030.

Worldwide Silicon Wafer Shipments Increase 2% Year-on-Year in Q1 2025, SEMI Reports

MILPITAS, Calif. — April 29, 2025 — Worldwide silicon wafer shipments increased 2.2% year-on-year (YoY) to 2,896 million square inches (MSI) from the 2,834 MSI recorded during the same quarter of 2024, the SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) reported in its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry. Sequentially, shipments contracted 9.0% quarter-over-quarter from the 3,182 MSI recorded during the fourth quarter of last year impacted, primarily, by seasonality and accumulated inventory levels throughout the supply chain.

TSMC’s cutting-edge A14 tech to hit fabs in 2028

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) plans to begin production with its A14 fabrication process in 2028, aiming to remain at the cutting edge of the chip industry.

The technology would advance the world’s biggest chipmaker beyond its current state-of-the-art 3-nanometer technology and the upcoming 2-nanometer process later this year. In a change of nomenclature, TSMC also plans an intermediary A16 chip process for late next year.

Taipei: Export orders rise 12.5% to 5-month high

Export orders last month rose 12.5 percent from a year earlier to US$5.88 billion, reaching a five-month high, while also increasing 12.1 percent to US$149.47 billion in the first quarter from a year earlier, the Ministry of Economic Affairs reported yesterday.

On a monthly basis, export orders last month increased 7.3 percent, which the ministry attributed to increases in orders for information and communications technology (ICT), and electronic and optoelectronic products, despite declines in orders of base metal, plastic, rubber and chemical products.

Hon Hai contracted to make EV for Mitsubishi: source

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密) has agreed to produce a new electric vehicle (EV) model for Mitsubishi Motors Corp of Japan, a source within the industry said on Sunday.

Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn Technology Group (富士康科技集團), would start initial production of the new EV model at a plant in Miaoli County owned by its partner Yulon Motor Co (裕隆汽車), said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The vehicle would be a modified version of Hon Hai’s Model B prototype, first unveiled in 2022, the source said, without giving a date for the expected start of production.
