Taiwan to spend NT$300bn on chips, AI
NEXT REVOLUTION: The plan would ensure that Taiwan controls key technologies to design advanced chips, the National Science and Technology Council said yesterday.
The Executive Yuan yesterday approved a plan to spend NT$300 billion (US$9.27 billion) in the next 10 years to fund innovations that would combine the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems and chips.
The “Chip-driven Taiwan Industrial Innovation Plan” was briefed to Cabinet members by the National Science and Technology Council and approved at the weekly Cabinet meeting.

Taiwan and Japan join hands to build JSMC’s first fab in Miyagi Prefecture
Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (PSMC), SBI Holdings, Inc., Japan's Miyagi Prefecture and JSMC signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU, The MOU is based on the premise of receiving subsidy from Japanese government) on the 31st, confirming that JSMC's first fab will be selected in Japan. The Second Northern Sendai Central Industrial Park in Ohira Village, Kurokawa District, Miyagi Prefecture (Second Northern Sendai Central Industrial Park) is the planned site.

CATL’s New Factory Can Produce One Cell Per Second, Battery Pack In 2.5 Minutes
China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the world’s largest battery supplier by capacity, has opened a new battery production phase claimed to be capable of manufacturing one cell per second.
CATL, a major battery supplier to brands like Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and many others, was able to achieve this blistering pace thanks to a highly automated production line at its power and energy storage base in Guian New District in China’s southwestern Guizhou province, the company said in a press release.

GlobalWafers to roll out 8-inch wafer process

Chipmaker Western Digital walks away from Kioxia merger talks
Western Digital has abruptly walked out of merger talks with Kioxia, shattering Bain Capital’s ambitions to create a US-Japan memory-chip champion, according to three people with direct knowledge of the negotiations.
The talks collapsed after South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix, which has a significant indirect stake in Kioxia, declared its opposition to the deal amid concerns the combined entity could challenge its position in the Nand memory sector. Analysts said the merged entity’s market share would be double that of SK Hynix.

China's Chongqing to set up 30 bln yuan tech project fund -report
BEIJING, Oct 26 (Reuters) - China’s Chongqing, a sprawling southewestern municipality, is setting up a fund worth 30 billion yuan ($4.10 billion) for projects including for new energy vehicles and semiconductors, Shanghai Securities News reported on Thursday.
The fund will aim to increase investments and attract venture capital institutions to speed up the development of a major industrial hub, according to the report.
