San’an and Inari to Acquire 100% of Lumileds Holding B.V.’s Shares

Amsterdam, Eindhoven, The Netherlands – August 1, 2025 – San’an Optoelectronics and Inari Amertron Berhad today announced they have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Lumileds Holding B.V. and its European and Asian subsidiaries (“Lumileds International”).

“This transaction is the next step of our ongoing transformation. As the LED industry evolves and continues to mature, I am confident that Lumileds International will continue to be successful and accelerate its growth under the new ownership,” said Steve Barlow, CEO of Lumileds International.

The transaction is expected to close by the first quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.

Canon Opens Semiconductor Manufacturing Systems Factory North of Tokyo; Improving Processes with Nanoimprint Technology

Canon Inc. unveiled its new factory in Utsunomiya primarily for manufacturing lithography systems, which use light to expose minute circuit patterns onto semiconductor substrates, to the press on Wednesday. It is the first time for Canon to establish a new semiconductor manufacturing equipment factory in 21 years since 2004. The company is responding to the growing demand for manufacturing equipment due to the rapid expansion of the semiconductor market.

Tesla CEO Musk says he discussed chip deal with Samsung Chairman Lee

SEOUL, July 30 (Yonhap) -- Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk said he discussed the details of a recent semiconductor supply deal with Samsung Electronics Co. Chairman Lee Jae-yong.

In a response to a user's comment on his X account on Tuesday (U.S. time) that Samsung Electronics "has no idea what they signed up for," Musk replied, "They do.

"I had a video call with the chairman and senior leadership of Samsung to go over what a real partnership would be like," he continued, adding they will "use the strengths of both companies to achieve a great outcome."

Tesla signs $4.3 billion LGES battery deal, source says, reducing China reliance

SEOUL, July 30 (Reuters) - South Korea's LG Energy Solution (LGES) (373220.KS), opens new tab has signed a $4.3 billion deal to supply Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab with energy storage system batteries, said a person familiar with the matter, as the U.S. company looks to reduce reliance on Chinese imports due to tariffs.
The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will be supplied from LGES's U.S. factory in Michigan, the person said on condition of anonymity because the details were not public.

Volkswagen Is Pouring Millions More Into Solid-State Battery Development

The Volkswagen Group is going full steam forward with the development and commercialization of next-generation solid-state batteries for electric vehicles.

The VW Group’s battery subsidiary PowerCo will now provide $131 million to solid-state battery start-up QuantumScape. The new funding will go towards the development of a pilot production line in San Jose, the start-up said in a press release this week.

Chips from TSMC’s US plant to cost more: AMD’s Su

Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) chief executive officer Lisa Su (蘇姿丰) on Wednesday said that the chips her company gets from supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) would cost more when they are produced in TSMC’s Arizona facilities.

Compared with similar parts from factories in Taiwan, the US chips would be “more than 5 percent, but less than 20 percent” in terms of higher costs, she said at an artificial intelligence (AI) event in Washington.

Tesla readies a six-seat version of the Model Y for China

[BEIJING] Tesla is preparing to launch a longer, six-seat version of its Model Y sport utility vehicle in China, where the carmaker has been losing ground to domestic manufacturers with fresher lineups.

The new variant of Tesla’s top-selling model will be about 15 centimetres longer than the existing Model Y, according to figures posted on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s website. The filing lists LG New Energy as the battery supplier.
