Silicon Motion Says It Will Seek to Enforce Merger Deal With MaxLinear
On Wednesday, the chip maker MaxLinear (ticker: MXL) shocked investors by announcing the termination of its deal to buy Silicon Motion Technology (SIMO). That happened just hours after the equally surprising news that the transaction had been approved by Chinese regulators, seemingly clearing the way for completion of a deal that pending for more than a year.

Samsung to keep cutting chip output to boost bottom line
Samsung Electronics will continue to reduce semiconductor output during the latter half of this year, to accelerate an earnings recovery by reducing inventory, the company said Thursday.
"We will make an additional adjustment to the production of both DRAM and NAND flash," Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President Kim Jae-joon, who is in charge of the memory business, said during a conference call on second-quarter earnings. "We will especially carry out a large-scale reduction in NAND production."

GlobalFoundries claims German chip subsidies will 'distort competition'
US semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries has criticized the German government's €20 billion ($22 billion) in semiconductor subsidies, claiming it will distort competition.
Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs has confirmed local semiconductor production will be boosted by the off-budget Climate and Transformation Fund starting next year.
